Evaluation of Topten Brief

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN – END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

Module Code - OUGD202WITHERS

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

This module has being a huge learning curve for me all the skills I have learnt have been new and so I have found areas hard but the outcome more pleasing knowing my achievements. After effects & i- web to storyboarding are software and skills that have proved a challenge but have enjoyed as it has forced me into areas that I as unsure about. I have had previous director knowledge in my national diploma coarse however this is a less capable programme with less features however it enabled me to understand the basics of animation.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

I felt that the key points to a generating quality work and been able to test and experiment is the ability to organise your work and have set time plans and been able to re assess your time if you fall behind. Within this module I feel that this is an area of mine that I have been able to push my self into being strict and through will time and organisation. This skill that I feel has dramatically developed will be a strong benefit for future projects which I am looking forward to test the ability of pushing my self

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The strengths within my work as I have just stated I feel have been the ability to develop on my organisational skills & time planning skills.

My resolution to the brief was in my opinion something that I am fairly proud of. As coming from a designer who’s interests are in print based briefs been able to feel and touch a final product to then start on after effects and i-web and come out will a substantial resolution has been an achievement for my self. Although I have struggled in areas with the help of tutors and skilled technician’s I have been able to overcome my problems and have enjoyed the interactivity of the project.

As a designer I become self absorbed by what and how my audience would use the website or see the animation. The outcome therefore I created to be sophisticated and clean looking rather than a typical recycled look of typography made out of bike wheels and bits of umbrellas.
I felt that as it was reused objects I wanted a message of old can be just as sophisticated as new in which I feel that the animation and i-web link together to create this effect.

I enjoyed creating something interactive for somebody to find information easily in which website design intertwined with animation is an area that I will develop although I would like to experiment with more sophisticate web based software to experiment with more areas within web design.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
The weaknesses within my work have been within i-web. Initially the programme was simple to use and navigate around however I found the programme unreliable. The website I created is not published as it should have been. Problems such as the text I created in i-web would change and go smaller and the annotation that I made on my tests did not show for some strange reason, once published along with the links that would change around when published. After numerous (over 15) attempts to solve this the i-web is still not to the standard that I would of liked but considering balancing time I tried my best to resolve the problems in which you could hopefully navigate around and access my work as I tried hard to ensure that the website was easy to navigate and read through from initial research through to development down to the final resolution.
Another weakness is my storyboarding I ensure that I did not go near a computer and begin animation until I had a clear understanding of what I wanted to do within my animation. My storyboarding became quiet personal and so then could have been annotated more with camera angles. However they still aided my animation. However with me being a doing motivating kind of person I found my self testing areas and adding areas into my animation that weren’t planned initially in my storyboards. This is one of the areas that I would have improved this may have made my outcome stronger.

I could imagine my animation on a website and from feedback from colleagues they also could imagine this. From this this is an area that I will develop and test as stated earlier. The animation works as a TV title yet looking back I am not sure weather the animation is youthful and as extravagant enough as the e4 channel this is an area that would need improving if E4 was my client.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Test & experiment with more with after effects to develop my skills with in the software to ensure best possible outcomes.

I feel that I need to be careful that my work doesn’t become to similar to past projects. Although my message was portrayed within the animation and i-web the style is something only to use if appropriate.

Develop my skills within web design, thinking ahead this could be highly useful to future projects and helpful testing towards my portflio website

Blogging_ this is an area that could always be improved I am constantly looking at other designers and their work I need to ensure that I am putting this constantly onto my blog to help aid ppd development and my interests within Graphic design.

Learn and develop my digital software skills in all areas understanding resolution and files sizes more. Easier routes to doing things, shortcuts and keeping up to date with digital formats to avoid problems occurring.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

1 2 3 4 5
Attendance 5

Colour testing

Whilst testing developing my animation i felt that the subject may becoming a little bland and whilst looking at the development of others I found that my client E4 was getting a little lost behind the sophistication. So I have tested the usual colour of a vibrant purple against my vector creations which i feel work yet i am losing the subtlty of

Kelidoscope test

This test is a test of movement between the vectors of junk and the sky. The animation has a magical fantasy but sophisticated theme yet I wanted some interesting clever movement between the vectors I need to ensure that i don't overcomplicate this as it could be seen as complicated and irelevant. THe affect is also easy to do whereas I enjoy creating challenges for myself to aid my skills & development.

Flock tester

Within my animation I needed to test the movement of paper planes and the movemnet of several planes flying together to craete a birdlike affect similar to the physop mtvhd advert.
This was a test to test the movement of a paper plane flittering through the sky. I put a wiggle affect of ( 5,7) on the planes to make a slight movement as the planes position moved. I then tested the movement of the plans together similar to the flock of birds in the physop advert for mthd which was one of my strong favorite animations. I put a soft drop shadow onto the planes to add some depth to the movement as the animation became vectors 3d based. I think now i need to add more planes and more compositions to the planes to make the flock of planes fly together.

Psyop Animation for MTV HD

This was the main influential and one of the best animations i have seen during my research. The animation is subtle & softening yet full of impact & strong technical technics that combine together to make a strong resolution that in relation to it;s context is highly appealing and attractive with the use of just black & off white. I tend to find the animations with less going on in them are more appreciated. The one that are more subtle seem to be more attractive. This animation is yet both subtle but as i found from my tests very difficult to create and if one line or shape is out of place the animation looks poor. Similar to the star dust boards award animation this work well with soft colour and complex yet simple areas that work together with strong impact.

BOARDS AWARDS Video by Stardust

This animation was also an inspiration for me. The animation is highly sophisticated, magical and fasinating. The way that the camera angels move and guide you through different genres of teh fantasy animation. Again the music very subtle which you can barly hear but gradually gets louder as the animation unfolds. The colours in the movement are gentle to the eye yet have impact. To try and recreate this with the skills on after effects that i know coming into a project like thisa for the first time would be highly complex and complicated and would be far to challenging for a first attempt even the story boarding must be horrifically complicated. However element have inspired me into what i can adapt into my own animation. I watch this animation now and again when I am sick of after effets testing and storyboarding I try and bring myself back together with this animation.

Fabrikx Motion Graphics Demoreel 06

Whilst researching motion graphics I came acroos this contempoary group. they show shgort graphicsof projects that they have created combining impacts with simplisty and complex areas. It was one of teh show reels that i enjoyed wathcing have watched many i became board quick and so this is one that kept my attentionwith the range of style and porojects they had combined together

Mellissa cook art

Aa a break of point from the digital madness and relying on technology i decided to have a break and combine both sides by looking at handgenerated work recorded. The drawing speak for themselves but watching them grow and progress alongside the progressive music helps aid the creation and makes you watxch to the end wanting to how realistic the drawing will get.

Looking into the quickey way that E4 produces inddents withthe commonly known colour of vibrant purple help draw the eye to areas of the motion graphics. Although the graphics are aimed at the younger generation it seems to have very vintage areas that would appeal to different areas of young generations yet the channle brings in people ranging from early to teens to late 30's with other channels such as more4 for the age group progressing from this which i feel the graphics help identify this

10 Creative Ways to Recycle Ordinary Objects

I found a very useful and interesting report about creative ways to recycle and reuse thrown away objects that is really inspiring. Recycling doesn’t have to be limited to helping the environment: it can also be a challenge and opportunity to ingenious designers who work with materials most people would consider waste to create amazing things. Some of the following designs serve multiple purposes: illustrating the material possibilities of what most would consider trash while also maximizing the aesthetic potential of what would otherwise be considered waste objects. Clothes become rugs, airline trolleys become furniture, cardboard becomes bridges and sewage turns into building blocks!

Sonic Cloth

Marcella Foschi isn’t the only one with ideas on how to reuse audio tapes. Some clever designers have taken it to the next level and begun to weave sonic cloth from the actual tape within the cassettes.

Marcella Foschi

Italian designer Marcella Foschi has developed a quite clever way to recycle cassette tapes: a product material that exists in abundance but is associated with a dying (or dead) technology. Her coin purses are at least cute (if not collectible) and appropriate a material we all know, love and have stopped using.

recycled growing gardens

There are all kinds of approaches to garbage gardening that appropriate trash items and reuse them for decorative or practical purposes in gardens. The example shown above is just one of many including colorful mosaics from broken dishes and assorted other ideas. Not extreme enough? Try guerilla gardening instead!

The Remida Center appropriates scrap materials from all kinds of local businesses in order to gain raw materials ranging from wood and metal to plexiglass and plastic that students can use in art projects. The idea is both to facilitate art but also to raise awareness about the origins of materials, essentially recycling otherwise unused materials and putting them toward the production of art.

recycled buildings

The BituBlock may interesting and almost artistic … until you realize it is made from post-consumer recycled products including ash, glass and, yes, sewage. Still, it doesn’t smell and ultimately it is an incredibly strong and durable building block that rivals other materials such as concrete that would be used in similar situations - and does so using almost entirely reused and recycled materials.

Architect Shigeru Ban is well known for a number of high-profile architectural designs but perhaps less so for his artistic and ecological side projects such as the cardboard bridge pictured above. This bridge is composed over over 250 recycled cardboard tubes with recycled paper and plastic comprising the stairs. Amazingly, this recycled bridge can hold up to 20 people at once!

There are few things being produced as rapidly, regularly and in such volume as newspapers. Many of these are, of course, recycled by traditional means, but what if they could serve another purpose that didn’t require the some amount of reprocessing? Sumer Erek has been working on one such alternative: reusing newspaper as interior decoration and insulation in a house

Ever wonder what happens to those oddly shaped airplane trolleys when the airlines are done using them? Well, so did Bordbar before they began appropriating and adding splashes of design to them and reselling them to the public as useful (if odd) multipurpose mobile furniture. These are highly customizable have have a surprising range of possible functions once they are recycled into use.

Creative Ways to Recycle Ordinary Objects

The Volksware designers have provided an interesting alternative way of recycling clothes that may not even bit fit for the Salvation Army. By stitching them and rolling them they have created a simple carpet system that can be cut to length and fit to a space. Something to think about the next time someone tells you to pick your clothes up off the floor!

Buy Nothing Day Advert

The first creative add that I have seen within my research using a receipt of money with important visual messages with the reciept. works well and keeps the audience interested especially with the aggressive music

Adbusters Buy nothing day

A creative way to show the use of freeness (buy nothing) day the concept works well although i am not sure about the violent music I would perhapes change thsi as i feel that it over powers the concept althougfh adbusters probally tried to portray the message aggressivly which is there personality with the advertising branded world.the recipt idea links well to my theme and is something i will test in my storyboarding and after effects testing
